Today we’re talking about superpowers.

You’re probably thinking “What the hell Kim superpowers are for comic books and fan fiction.” But what if I told you that every human on this planet, including you, has a special power?

It might sound like nonsense at first. However with the latest research of the human brain, scientists have discovered that we in fact do possess a superpower. And if we can unlock it, it can help us reach our highest potential.

I’m not talking about the ability to fly or turn invisible. Although invisibility would be super dope. I’m talking about a special force that comes from inside of us. It’s the one thing that tugs at you whenever you’re about to make an important decision. And it’s something that every successful person has mastered, from Oprah Winfrey to Arianna Huffington.

The superpower is our intuition.

The human brain runs on two channels of thought: the ego and the intuition.

The ego is our fight-or-flight response. It’s what keeps us alive, away from danger, and plays a crucial role in our survival. On the other hand, the intuition (or instincts) is what tells us to take the leap of faith. It’s the unconscious part of our mind that allows us to move forward with our goals without any analytical thinking. It’s what some people call “the gut feeling”.

The concept of the human intuition has captivated philosophers and scientists for years. Yet throughout those years, scientists have had trouble finding quantifiable evidence that the intuition actually exists. Intuition has only been described as a feeling which cannot be seen or proven. So it begs the question: Is this is a real thing or just a hoax?

In a 2016 study, Joel Pearson and a group of fellow psychologist conducted an experiment that would help them obtain concrete evidence that the intuition exists. Their mission was to see if this part of our brain can improve our decision making. The results were a success and, for the first time, they were able to collect strong evidence that the intuition exists in the human body.

Pearson stated in an article: “These data suggest that we can use unconscious information in our body or brain to help guide us through life, to enable better decisions, faster decisions, and be more confident in the decisions we make.”

Everyone has this superpower.

Whether we know it or not, we have the ability to harness our intuition to make decisions. It’s the voice in your head that tells you to take that first initial step into something great. Our intuition not only affects the brain, but we feel it in our body and it enhances our confidence. So if research shows that intuition does exist and can help us live our best life…why don’t we use it?

The answer is simple.

We’re taught not to use it!

As a society, we’ve learned to believe that rationality is what matters most when making decisions about anything. We’re taught that our instincts are wrong. That it would lead us to disaster. How our intuition isn’t logical and we’re told that we need to be reasonable before we do something. Or to listen to someone else because they know what’s best for us.

We end up not listening to our inner voice and as time goes by, we lose it. This is our biggest downfall!

Our intuition is our inner guidance system. It’s our soul, our being, our superpower that helps us evolve. Without the intuition, we cannot grow. After listening to our ego for years, we’re unable to expand into better humans. The good news is we can get it back but that might be tricky.

How can we tell the difference between ego and intuition?

We’re so comfortable and programmed to listen to our ego. With all the noise that goes externally and internally, how can we tell when we’re using our intuition or our ego? To start this journey, we can focus on one word:

Should.

Whenever we have thoughts that start with should or have the word should in it, that’s ego. Ego will always get in the way when intuition is front in center. An example of ego and intuition would be if you want to stop smoking:

  • Intuition: Yepp let’s start now.
  • Ego: Maybe I should wait until the end of the week to start and just finish this pack.

Another example would be asking for a raise or a promotion at work:

  • Intuition: You’ve worked so hard all year and you deserve this. Let’s go into our bosses office and ask to talk about this.
  • Ego: I shouldn’t bother them about it because that would be rude. Maybe I should just wait for my review or to see if they bring up the topic.

Remember, our ego is there to keep us safe…but it’s not there to help us grow. That’s what the intuition is there for: to help us grow. You don’t need to see what the next steps are. You don’t need to wonder how it’s going to end. But if you have this “gut feeling” that is rooted deep, that’s intuition.

Our intuition will never fault us.

When our intuition tells us to take that leap, it can be scary. It’s asking us to take the first step without a plan, without analytical thinking, and without excuse. It’s asking us to change and change is scary. We humans have a fear of the unknown which is why we’ve stayed with the ego for so long. It’s safer to think with ego.

But what we don’t know is that our intuition isn’t reckless. It knows what’s best for you and it will never drive you into danger. It’s there to help us live to our highest potential. It can feel like a mental tug of war at times. However if we truly want to live to our highest potential, we need the intuition and the ego to work together. And that takes practice!
